La Liga Wk9: Leganes stun Athletic

Leganes heaped the pressure on Athletic Bilbao boss Jose Angel Ziganda in Sunday’s Week 9 action, while Atletico Madrid stole victory at Celta Vigo.

Before those games, however, Villarreal thrashed Las Palmas 4-0 to propel themselves into La Liga’s top six.

Cedric Bakambu got the ball rolling with his eighth goal of the season, before Mario Gaspar and Nicola Sansone rounded off the win, sandwiching a Ximo Navarro effort into his own net.

Las Palmas, however, remain in the relegation zone after five consecutive defeats, with Pako Ayestaran overseeing the last three.

Atleti’s trip to Celta went ahead as planned, despite the Galicians requesting the match to be postponed or played at Wanda Metropolitano due to wildfires damaging part of their stadium.

That didn’t affect the hosts, who rained Jan Oblak’s goal with 17 attempts, yet Kevin Gameiro scored with Atleti’s only shot on target to hand them a welcome win.

Finally, Leganes reached the heady heights of fifth with an impressive 1-0 victory over Athletic.

Claudio Beauvue’s drive also preserved Leganes’ joint-best defensive record of just three goals conceded in the League, only matched by leaders Barcelona.

Athletic, on the other hand, are languishing in 11th place after a fourth loss in six matches.
