Munain surgery on torn ligament

Athletic Bilbao’s Iker Muniain has undergone surgery on a torn knee ligament which could rule him out for the rest of the season.

The 24-year-old, who has started 12 matches for the Basques this season, was stretchered off in injury time during Athletic’s 1-0 home defeat to Zorya in the Europa League a fortnight ago.

“Let's get started!” Munain captioned a Twitter post alongside a picture of him with his thumbs up following surger.

It is feared the forward will miss at least seven months of action due to a tear in his right anterior cruciate ligament although Athletic reported the surgery was a success with ‘no complications’.

Two years ago, Munain missed six months of action following a torn cruciate knee ligament sustained against Sevilla.
