Andres Iniesta has urged political leaders in Spain and Catalonia to talk and insisted ‘we deserve to live in peace’.
The 33-year-old Barcelona midfielder has never previously spoken openly about the situation in Catalonia – the region of Spain where he was not born but has spent the entirety of his professional career.
“I never have and I never will publicly address such complicated situations and diverse feelings,” Iniesta wrote on his official Facebook page.
“However, the situation we are currently experiencing is a unique one.
“So before we do more damage to ourselves, we need dialogue. Those responsible must talk. Do it for all of us. We deserve to live in peace.”
Catalan leaders are insisting they will declare independence while the Spanish government is insisting that is totally illegal.
