Villarreal dismiss Coach Fran Escriba

Villarreal have sacked Coach Fran Escriba following a poor start to the season, with a new appointment set ‘in the coming hours’.

The Yellow Submarine crashed to a 4-0 defeat at newly-promoted Getafe on Sunday as their slow start to the new La Liga season continued.

The club suffered successive defeats against Levante and Real Sociedad and despite collecting seven points from the following three games before the loss in Madrid, it wasn’t enough to save Escriba.

It is the second top flight managerial casualty of the campaign in Spain following Alaves’s dismissal of Luis Zubeldia the previous week.

Formerly Coach of both Elche and Getafe, 52-year-old Escriba was appointed at the Madrigal on the eve of last season following the departure of Marcelino Garcia Toral.

He guided them to an impressive fifth-place finish last season, guaranteeing European football and won 26 of his 59 matches at the helm.

The club’s statement confirmed Escriba’s replacement would be announced on Monday.
