‘Madrid never doubted themselves’

Nacho Fernandez assures Real Madrid “never had any doubts” about themselves after Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Alaves.

Madrid were made to fight hard for the win, having failed to take enough of chances and ultimately rode their luck, with Alaves hitting the woodwork twice, and Nacho felt Los Blancos were only lacking “a killer touch” in front of goal.

“We’ve never had any doubts,” the defender said after the game.

“We’ve worked very well all year round, last season was perfect but we don’t have any doubts now. We’re a committed team.

“Lack of goals? Doubts have been talked about, but it’s not because of that. We’ve lacked the killer touch [in front of goal].

“We found it easier to score in previous seasons, but we have pretty much the same squad and we have the best players up top. That’s why we don’t have to worry.

“They hit the woodwork twice, but we also had some very clear chances. We knew they’d be tight at a complicated place to play, but we had chances too.

“The most important thing is that we took the three points. My position? I can play wherever the Coach wants me. I’m prepared for it.”
