Celta fined for low attendances

Celta Vigo have been hit with a fine from La Liga due to the club’s low attendances at the start of the season.

The Galician club’s opening two home league matches against Real Sociedad and Alaves have had recorded attendances of 16,961 and 17,384 in their 29,000-capacity Balaidos stadium.

These figures fall below the league’s new guidelines requiring clubs to fill a minimum of 70% of their stadium for matches with the authorities handing out their first fine of the season.

Reports do not state the figure of the fine, although due to this being a first offence it is likely to be modest. The fines are justified by the governing bodies as part of a plan to make the league the most marketable in world football.

The cheapest tickets at the stadium are available for €15 (£13.33) in the Marcador and Gol stands, while the most expensive tickets in the main stand sets fans back €40 (£35.53).

Juan Carlos Unzue’s side face newly-promoted Getafe on Thursday evening and the club will no doubt be keen to ensure they sell as many tickets for the encounter as possible.
