Berizzo questions Liverpool dismissal

Sevilla boss Eduardo Berizzo questioned the referee’s decision to send him off after he refused to give Liverpool the ball back. “They did it too…”

Berizzo became the pantomime villain during Sevilla’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday as he was sent to the stands for deliberately dropping the ball twice before the Reds could throw it back into play.

“It was difficult to hold them back,” the Coach said after the game.

“We took the lead but couldn’t contain their forward play after that. They caused us a lot of problems, but their penalty miss put us back in the game.

“Improvement in the second half? We were more organised. Sarabia’s introduction balanced us.

“We didn’t suffer from their counterattacks and began to occupy spaces. We could’ve won the match right at the end.

“We recovered from a bad first half, knowing that we could turn it around. This draw leaves with positive feelings. We deserve a lot of credit.

“Sent off? I threw the ball. They did it when they were in the lead. It was to make up for what they did.

“The referee thought I wanted to waste time while losing. They did it in the first half while winning and while we were losing in the second half, I did the same thing. I didn’t understand the referee’s decision.”
