Poyet departs Shanghai Shenhua

Gus Poyet has resigned as coach of Shanghai Shenhua after suffering their fourth successive league defeat on Sunday.

The former Real Betis Coach was appointed by the Chinese Super League club last November, only two weeks after his dismissal from Los Verdiblancos.

Despite a number of high-profile arrivals – including Carlos Tevez, Fredy Guarin, Obafemi Martins and most –recently, Jose Antonio Reyes – his side sat 12th in the 16-team league.

“Mr Poyet formally offered his resignation to Shanghai Shenhua [on Monday],” read an official club statement.

“After considering the decision, the club has agreed to accept Mr Poyet's resignation. From today, Mr Poyet will no longer be head coach of the club.”

Poyet's time in charge started badly with Shenhua losing 2-0 to Australia's Brisbane Roar in a play-off for a place in the group stages of the Asian Champions League.
