Sevilla through after fright

Sevilla qualified for the group stages of the Champions League for a club record third successive season but suffered a fright against Istanbul Basaksehir.

Leading 2-1 from the first leg, the hosts hit the post early on through Gabriel Mercado but fell behind on the night when Eljero Elia netted in the 17th minute from Junior Caicara’s cross.

Following a missed of host chances, Los Rojiblancos levelled seven minutes into the second half with Sergio Escudero netting his second goal of the tie – heading home from a Jesus Navas cross.

Wissam Ben Yedder had appeared to ensure the Andalucian’s progress after netting from the tight angle after being played in by Nolito.

However, with seven minutes remaining Edin Visca fired home past Sergio Rico and the goalkeeper made a crucial save as the match ticked into injury time, tipping Emre Belozoglu’s free-kick onto the frame of the post as Sevilla progressed.
