Sporting’s clause broke Zeegelaar deal

Sevilla cancelled a deal for Sporting CP full back Marvin Zeegelaar after the Portuguese club insisted on having a say in a future sale, say reports in Spain.

Marca say the Lisbon giants were insistent they would sanction any future sale by Los Rojiblancos to ensure the Dutchman never joined any of their rival clubs, including Benfica and FC Porto.

Multiple reports on Wednesday suggested a €3m deal had been agreed with the 27-year-old but fresh reports suggested a deal broke down as the Andalucians were unhappy with a ‘new development’.

Earlier this summer, Jordan Amavi failed a medical at Los Rojiblancos while other full-backs were ruled out in their attempts to replace Benoit Tremoulinas.

“We still do not have a left-back, sometimes reality is tough and our search continues,” said Sevilla sporting director Oscar Arias in Istanbul on Wednesday.

Zeegelaar – formerly of Ajax, Blackpool and Rio Ave – has not yet been capped by Netherlands but has been called up to provisional squads this season and represented Os Leoes 27 times last season, including five times in the Champions League.
