Celades facing Spain U21 sack?

Albert Celades’ future as Spain Under-21 Coach is reportedly hanging in the balance after Friday’s lost European U21 Championship Final.

According to AS, “a lot of questions” are being asked of Celades after another failure at the helm of Spain’s U21 team.

The former Barcelona, Real Madrid and Celta Vigo midfielder took charge of La Rojita in 2014 after Julen Lopetegui’s departure to Porto.

However, he failed to lead the team to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, while they only qualified for the Euro U21 tournament by the virtue of playoffs.

Furthermore, the 1-0 defeat to Germany on Friday exposed “poor tactics” on Spain U21’s part as Die Mannschaft “nullified the strengths of Celades’ men and played as a unit”, in contrast to La Rojita, who were “disorderly under pressure and without answers”.

Celades also faced criticism for his perceived reliance on individuals, such as Gerard Deulofeu, who completed the match, despite not being at peak fitness.

Ex-Atletico Madrid defender Santi Denia has been put forward as the favourite to replace the 41-year-old.
