Sporting Gijon have appointed vastly experienced Coach Paco Herrera following the side’s relegation from La Liga, the club have confirmed.
Herrera recently left La Liga 123 rivals Real Valladolid after narrowly missing out on a promotion playoff spot and will replace Rubi, who failed to save the Asturians from relegation, in the hot seat at El Molinon.
Sporting will be the twelfth Spanish side coached by Herrera and the 63-year-old represented the club as a player between 1974-77.
He will now join up with Miguel Torrecilla at Sporting, who left his position as sporting director at Real Betis at the end of last month.
The club are braced for a series of player departures this summer, with Spanish youth international Jorge Mere set to join Los Verdiblancos while a number of others may leave the Asturian side.
