Ziganda appointed Athletic Bilbao boss

Jose Angel ‘Cuco’ Ziganda has been appointed Coach of Athletic Bilbao, replacing Ernesto Valverde, who is reported to be Barcelona-bound.

The 50-year-old, previously Coach of Bilbao Athletic, has signed a two-year deal to succeed Ernesto Valverde, whose departure after four years in charge was confirmed on Tuesday.

"Jose Angel Ziganda will be the new coach of Athletic Club for the next two seasons," a statement from Los Leones confirmed.

Ziganda netted 76 La Liga goals in over 250 appearances between 1991 and 1998 for Los Leones and was capped twice by Spain during his playing career; he has coached at both Osasuna and Xerez before returning to the setup at San Mames six years ago.

His introductory press conference at San Mames is scheduled for 12pm CET on Thursday.
