Lega thump Betis at Butarque

Leganes all but guaranteed their safety in La Liga this season after a thumping 4-0 win over Real Betis on Monday night at Butarque.

The victory moves Lega six points clear of Sporting Gijon and the relegation zone with only two matches remaining and despite Sporting’s superior head-to-head record should they both finish level on points, relegation now appears unlikely.

Alexander Szymanowski’s early penalty was followed by a quickfire Nabil El Zhar strike before Gabriel Pires and Szymanowski again netted in the second half to send the home fans into jubilation.

It was on Lega’s second win in ten matches but should be enough to guarantee their debut season in the top flight is a success.

The hosts went ahead after seven minutes when Alex Martinez handled in the area and Szymanowski netted from the spot.

They then doubled their lead eight minutes later when ex-Liverpool man El Zhar fired in his first goal since January.

It was an uphill battle for Betis from then and Pires wrapped up the win with a brilliant 35-yard drive after 65 minutes.

Szymanowski then added a fourth 10 minutes from time to put the gloss on the victory.

Los Verdiblancos stay 15th and face Atletico Madrid next, while next up for Leganes is a trip to Athletic Bilbao.
