Depor defeat leaves relegation fears

Deportivo La Coruna failed to alleviate their relegation fears as they crashed to a 2-1 home defeat by Espanyol with only two games remaining.

Three points would have guaranteed Depor’s safety in the division but the defeat, coupled with Sporting Gijon's win over Las Palmas, means they are five points above the drop zone with six points left to play for.

Pepe Mel’s side made a sluggish start and never recovered – Leo Baptistao gave the Basques the lead in the 14th minute and strike partner Gerard Moreno doubled the advantage just before the half hour.

Florin Andone pulled one back two minutes into the second half but the hosts could not find an equaliser despite enjoying 60 percent possession and 21 efforts on goal.

Espanyol remain ninth in the standings while Depor finish their campaign away at Villarreal and at home to Las Palmas.
