Depor fail to guarantee safety

Deportivo La Coruna failed to confirm their safety in La Liga this season after being held to a 2-2 draw by already-relegated Osasuna.

A victory at El Sadar would have guaranteed safety for the Galicians, but a late own goal from Juanfran gave the home side a point and left Deportivo eight points clear of 18th-placed Sporting Gijon, who have three games remaining.

Jhon Mondragon gave the hosts the lead in the fourth minute – firing home a half-volley after Pepe Mel’s side had failed to clear a corner but Deportivo equalised on 18 minutes when Guilherme dos Santos was left unmarked to score with a diving header at the back post.

Dos Santos doubled his tally for the match midway through the second half but Juanfran – who had hit the bar in the first half – levelled proceedings unintentionally.

Depor stay 16th while Osasuna stay rooted to the bottom, picking up only their 19th point of the campaign.
