Atletico Madrid’s hopes of a top three finish suffered a setback on Tuesday as they fell to a surprise 1-0 home defeat to Villarreal.

Roberto Soriano netted the game’s only goal with eight minutes remaining to sucker punch Diego Simeone’s side, who had dominated the game with 23 shots on goal but failing to find the net.

Los Colchoneros were made to pay for being extremely wasteful in the final third and have now lost their eight-game unbeaten streak in the league which had seen seven victories.

Visiting goalkeeper Andres Fernandez made a string of excellent saves throughout including from Antoine Griezmann and Saul Niguez alongside a superb one-on-one stop from Nicolas Gaitan.

Simeone’s side’s misery was compounded when Belgian forward Yannick Carrasco – a second half substitute – was forced off with an apparent shoulder injury.

Fifth-placed Villarreal have moved to within five points of Sevilla, who could go level with Atleti on Thursday when they host Celta Vigo.
