Eibar’s Euro challenge intensifies

Former Manchester United forward Bebe was among the scorers as Eibar kept their European dream alive with victory over Las Palmas.

The Portuguese player opened the scoring in the 13th minute after capitalising on some indecisive defending from the visitors and it was his cross that Kike Garcia converted to make it 2-0 before the break.

Mauricio Lemos' terrific dipping free kick from range just after the hour mark restored some hope for Los Amarillos but a penalty from Adrian Gonzalez – awarded after consultation between the referee and his assistant when Kike complained he was pulled down by David Simon – restored the Basque side’s two-goal cushion late on.

The hosts moved to within three points of sixth-placed Athletic Club Bilbao and two away from Real Sociedad in seventh as the race for Europa League places intensifies.
