Sporting Gijon missed the chance to draw level on points with Deportivo La Coruna as a late Iago Aspas goal secured a point for Celta Vigo at El Molinon.
Moi Gomez had given the Asturians the lead four minutes into the second half as he converted a penalty after Carlos Carmona had been scythed down by Carles Planas inside the area.
However, Jorge Mere was dismissed fifteen minutes from time for a professional foul on Marcelo Diaz and Aspas scored directly from the resulting free-kick – his thirteenth league goal of the campaign.
The result leaves Sporting in 18th place and two points off managerless Depor, who crashed to a 4-0 defeat at Leganes the previous afternoon, while Eduardo Berizzo’s Celta drop one place to tenth.
Next up for Sporting is a daunting trip to Camp Nou on Wednesday night while will host Espanyol the same evening.
