‘Athletic must kill off home games’

Ernesto Valverde has stressed the importance of Athletic Bilbao “killing off our home games” ahead of Saturday’s clash with Deportivo La Coruna.

Despite losing just one of their 11 matches at San Mames in La Liga this season, Athletic have fallen behind in seven of them and Valverde reminded his players to be “more attentive”.

“We have to kill off our home games, which will only get harder,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

“We’re doing it at the moment, but it’s not easy to win in La Liga, and doing it at home is a bonus.

“We’ll play with the intention of correcting a few things because there have been many games in which our opponents have taken the lead, forcing us to make extra efforts.

“We’ve talked about it. For example, during our last game against Sporting, we had difficulty finding our game.

“When your opponents apply strong pressure, it’s easier and your opponents seem to come out more. We must have the resources to overcome these small issues.

“Depor? Although they’re not in a comfortable position, they deserve more. They lost at Eibar but were very good.

“We must be attentive because they do very well tactically, they usually create chances and have three attackers that move well.

“They’re not near the relegation positions, but they need to pick up points and that’s something we need to take into account.”
