Simeone delighted for Torres

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone expressed his delight at Fernando Torres’ return to form after the striker’s brace against Leganes on Saturday.

Torres followed his impressive appearance as a substitute against Barcelona midweek with both of Atleti’s goals in a 2-0 victory over Leganes to ensure his side consolidated La Liga’s fourth and final Champions League spot.

“Renewal for Torres? It depends on the club, the sporting side and the Coach. Like always, though, it depends on the results,” the Coach said after the game.

“Torres has had four fantastic days, that speaks very well of his ability to continue working and fighting.

“Not playing hasn’t bothered him and he’s trained in the same way. That’s his best quality and hopefully he continues like this.

“I saw good spells of play in the first and second half. We started well, went down and got back up.

“We had different moments, but that’s normal. We came to play from three days ago and we’ll play again in another three. It’s not an excuse, it’s the reality.

“At no point did I enjoy the match. Since [Friday] until 18:00 [on Saturday, referring to the bad weather]. It was an ugly game, the weather …

“Still, the players solved it well and there were spells of good play from us.

“Griezmann’s missed penalty? These are things that happen. Even Maradona had a spell when he missed penalties, Messi too, Neymar, Suarez …

“He’s another of those fantastic players who can also miss penalties.

“Saul? It seemed to me that he wasn’t having a good game and our 1-0 lead was small. Correa could hurt them and he was perfect for what we were looking for.”
