OFFICIAL: Celta-Madrid called off

Tonight’s match between Celta Vigo and Real Madrid has been officially called off by La Liga on safety grounds.

Heavy storms damaged a part of Celta’s Balaidos stadium on Friday, prompting Mayor of Vigo Abel Caballero and broadcaster Movistar+ to state that the Galicians’ game against Madrid would not go ahead.

A statement on La Liga’s official website reads: “According to the report of Vigo City Council, this body believes that there is not [sufficient] safety for fans and players attending the game on Sunday February 5, 2017, the Week 21 match in LaLiga Santander between Celta Vigo and Real Madrid.

“Therefore, having received this information, LaLiga and Celta have transferred this report to the RFEF.

“LaLiga will propose possible dates for the above game while listening to the opinions of the clubs and television broadcasters so that the President of the RFEF decides, as indicated by the procedure of the federative regulation in accordance with articles 239, 240 and 241 to address the date of a postponed match, and delegates as usual with the Competition Committee.”

The council’s report adds work on repairing the damage cannot begin until Tuesday as winds of 40km/h upwards will continue to affect the region in the meantime, while there are no indications as yet on when the match will be replayed.
