Griezmann strike earns Atleti point

Antoine Griezmann's strike from distance 10 minutes from time earned Atletico Madrid a 2-2 draw against Athletic Bilbao.

Diego Simeone's team initially took an early lead through Koke at San Mames, the midfielder's cross evading everybody before nestling in the far corner of the net.

However, a fine effort by Inigo Lekue just before half time levelled things up, before an Oscar De Marcos header turned the match in favour of the hosts.

It looked like the Basque team were on course to secure a win that would have taken them within three points of Atleti, but Griezmann drilled a powerful low drive beyond Gorka Iraizoz to claim a share of the points for his side.

The result means the Rojiblancos lose more ground on LaLiga's pace-setters, with both Real Madrid and Sevilla having recorded wins this weekend. They are now nine points behind their cross-city rivals, and it appears increasingly likely that the 2014 champions will have to content themselves with trying to secure a top-four finish this campaign.

As for Athletic, Coach Ernesto Valverde will view Griezmann's late goal as a missed oppportunity to close the gap on the Champions League places. They remain seventh, six points adrift of today's opponents.
