Abelardo won’t quit Sporting

Sporting Gijon coach Abelardo Fernandez insists he has no intention of quitting despite coming under increasing pressure following Sunday’s loss to Eibar.

A penalty from Adrian Gonzalez was followed by goals from Pedro Leon and Antonio Luna as Eibar raced into an early 3-1 lead – with Carlos Carmona replying for the hosts at El Molinon – and despite Nacho Cases pulling a goal back in the second half Sporting slipped to yet another league defeat to remain mired in the relegation zone.

Abelardo reiterated he feels "capable, willing and able to keep moving forward," and said that him staying at the club "depends on the Board of Directors."

"Two individual mistakes have cost two goals and that is very difficult to recover from, especially so early on,” he is quoted as saying by Marca.

“Our play isn’t good enough and a few things aren’t working, but you must also state in fairness that we are not having any luck.”

The former Barcelona defender again refused to speculate on why top scorer Duje Cop was left out of the team, insisting that he considered the 18-man squad he selected "were the most suitable to face this match."
