Luis Suarez insists Barcelona should “just renew” Lionel Messi’s contract and ignore common sense after the No 10’s tie-winning goal against Athletic Bilbao.
Messi’s second free kick against Athletic secured a 4-3 aggregate victory for Barca in the Copa del Rey last 16, and Suarez – who scored the Catalans’ opening goal on Wednesday – appeared to take issue with CEO Oscar Grau’s earlier remarks regarding a new deal for the Argentine.
“I’m happy for my goal, but the most important thing is that it helped to put us through in the cup,” the forward said after the game.
“With Messi, what you have to do is just renew [his contract], not have common sense.
“Pique? He says what he thinks, others think things but don’t say them.
“We’re with him, although sometimes he has to be careful.
“I already said that I wasn’t going to go to the FIFA gala. I didn’t lose any sleep about it.
“We’re happy with our work on a general level. The win was just what we needed, but we were calm because we knew we were working well.
“Referees? They’re always talked about for good and bad reasons, but what you have to do is keep working in order to achieve your goals.”
