Malaga have appointed Marcelo Romero as their new manager to replace the outgoing Juande Ramos, the club confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.
The Uruguayan joined the coaching staff at La Rosaleda after Javi Gracia's appointment in 2014, and he served as a number two under the now Rubin Kazan boss and also under Ramos, who's departure was confirmed on Tuesday.
Romero's only management experience is at Uruguayan third tier side Alhaurin de la Torre, but he did play for the Costa Del Sol outfit for six years between 2001 and 2007, making 130 appearances.
The move is a surprise – Red Bull Salzburg boss Oscar Garcia had been the frontrunner for the post, along with former Espanyol boss Sergio Gonzalez.
The 40-year-old did lead Malaga for three games last season at various points due to Gracia being unavailable – for a 3-3 draw at Malaga, a 1-0 win away to Sporting Gijon and a 4-1 victory over Las Palmas.
