Barca deny ‘Messi clause’ in deal

Barcelona have denied a 'Messi clause' exists in their world-record kit sponsorship deal with Japanese e-commerce giants Rakuten.

Reports in Spain emerged that such a clause was in the €55m-a-year deal that if the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was to leave Camp Nou, it would allow Rakuten to pull the plug on their five-year sponsorship.

"What is certain is that no Messi clause exists," Barca vice-president Manel Arroyo told journalists after the announcement.

"Leo wants to end his footballing career with Barcelona, as he has repeated many times, and we can't even think about letting him leave… and we are working for that to be the case.

"There is absolutely no reason to worry. Messi's renewal is coming."

The president of the Catalan club, Josep Maria Bartomeu, also said he was 'convinced' the Argentine would remain at the club.
