‘Ronaldo must retire at Madrid’

Zinedine Zidane has paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo in light of his new contract, insisting that the Portuguese “had to” retire at Real Madrid.

Ronaldo is set to see out the remainder of his career at Madrid, given he is 31 years old and will be 36 once his new deal expires, and Zidane dedicated a significant part of his post-Leganes interview to the prolific forward.

“Going into the match against Atletico with an advantage doesn’t give us more security,” the Coach said.

“When we return from the international break, we’ll prepare well for the derby like it’s a big match.

“We’re going on with the objective of picking up points. We had a good game, although it was difficult at first. We lost many balls.

“When we found the [first] goal, it changed the game, the second half was ours and I’m happy with the match and clean sheet.

“Scrutiny after each game? We’re Real Madrid, but it helps us, thinking this way, because we can’t lower the bar, we have to keep it high in order to win and to get what we want.

“Is our work recognised? I don’t think so. This is Madrid, it is what it is and has always been so.

“We’re not going to win the League with 100 points guaranteed. I think it’s becoming increasingly difficult to easily win a game in this division.

“The first half was very difficult for us. Then in the second half, everything became easier after we scored.

“Bale and Cristiano? I always think of the team. I’m happy with everyone’s work. There’s always one that makes the difference, but what matters to me is the team.

“Casemiro is a matter of days away. He’s back on the grass. I’m happy with Luka’s return. After that comes Sergio, our captain. I hope everything goes well with their games for their national teams.

“Ronaldo? There’s nothing wrong with him. What we want is for him to always score. He scored three at Alaves and that’s it.

“He always wants to score, but nothing’s wrong if he doesn’t. He’s fine, getting involved and calm.

“Set-pieces? If the ball is on the left, Bale, and if it’s on the right, Cristiano. If it’s in the middle then it’s the one who feels more confident.

“Kovacic? He’s doing great. When everyone’s available, he might get fewer minutes, but that doesn’t mean anything. What’s important is that he is happy with what he’s doing.

“I see him enjoying himself. When he play, he takes responsibility and I appreciate that very much. He went off with a slight knock, I hope it’s not too serious.

“Ronaldo’s renewal? I’m happy because he’s a player who has to finish his career at Madrid. He’s unique.

“His dream is to retire here and I’m happy he has renewed and will retire in a Blancos shirt like I did.”
