Tebas: More watched Eibar than Liverpool

La Liga president Javier Tebas has claimed more people in Spain watched Eibar play Osasuna than Liverpool taking on Manchester United.

The two matches overlapped on Monday 17 October, with the two comparitively small top flight Spanish sides playing out a pulsating five-goal encounter while the match between the Premier League's two best-supported clubs ended scoreless.

"Liverpool recently played Manchester United at the same time as SD Eibar v CA Osasuna and viewing figures in Spain were higher for the latter,” Tebas explained at the Montel media event.

“In another example, eleven times more people watched the recent Sevilla v Atletico Madrid game than Chelsea v Manchester United.

“The opposite also happens in England, where Tottenham Hotspur v Southampton has better viewing figures than El Clasico.

“This shows how history and national idiosyncrasies, often so important in sport, give domestic competitions a hold that is very difficult to break."
