QSF: Espanyol work in progress

Quique Sanchez Flores insists Espanyol are still a work in progress but will “settle on not losing” after Friday’s 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad.

Espanyol are still looking for their first La Liga win under Flores as Willian Jose cancelled out Pablo Piatti’s opener with only 12 minutes remaining at Anoeta to leave the Catalans languishing in 15th place.

“We played against a very good team,” the Coach said after the game.

“They tightened up a lot and it cost us going forward. We lost metres on the pitch.

“I don’t think we missed a great opportunity, we faced opponents who played very good football.

“What I liked most were the first 15 minutes of the second half. We want to have the ball normally, without anxiety. It’s a process and for the time being, we’re settling on not losing.

“[Javi Lopez’s injury] conditioned us a lot. Had we been able to bring on a fresh forward, we’d have recovered the metres that we lost.

“This is football and it can happen but usually early in the season.

“We’re a project under construction. We’re not mentally or physically at a stage to take the initiative, we’re just starting out. In addition, we visited a very difficult pitch.

“Diego Lopez and David Lopez [debuting] were two bits of good news. They’ve performed very well in a very short time.”
