Abelardo relishing selection headache

Sporting Gijon boss Abelardo Fernandez admits that while “it’s very difficult” to pick from a full squad for the visit of Leganes, “it’s a welcome situation”.

Sporting will be hoping to make it two wins from three when they host Leganes in Sunday’s early La Liga kick-off, and Abelardo believes his side’s chances have been boosted by a selection headache, which sees the Coach have everyone at his disposal.

“It’s very difficult. We’ve trained very well all week and now I must make decisions,” he explained at a Press conference.

“Having everyone available is a welcome situation, and [the international break] went well.

“[Douglas and Borja Viguera] are fine but may need a little more rhythm in training.

“The match against Leganes is important because we’re playing at home and a demanding schedule follows, but our opponents have started very well.

“No-one expected them to win in Vigo and draw with Atletico Madrid. They were very complicated things [to achieve].

“They’re very difficult to beat, very orderly and intense, and they have a Coach who brings performances out of them. They’ll be very motivated after their great start to the season.

“We must maintain the same intensity and rhythm of the first two games in order for us to win.

On Leganes’ former Sporting striker Miguel Angel Guerrero, Abelardo added: “He’s doing very well and he’ll surely will be very motivated.”
