Marcelino: Departure not due to last day

Former Villarreal manager Marcelino has stated his departure had nothing to do with the final day loss at Sporting Gijon.

Marcelino was speaking publicly for the first time since his surprise departure from the post last month, which club President Fernando Roig has since stated was in relation to the club's final day defeat at Sporting Gijon last season.

Villarreal, having already secured 4th spot, were accused of not trying and allowing Sporting Gijon – who Marcelino had previously played for and coached – to win the game and retain their top flight status.

"On August 10th (the day of his sacking) I was told that the termination of my contract had nothing to do with that match," explained the 51-year-old at his press conference.

"I did nothing to cheapen the competition and that's why I am here – with a clear conscience.

"The President phoned me to say 'I never doubted your honesty, if I had, I would have dismissed you immediately.'

Marcelino, who is currently without a club, did express regret at the language he had used surrounding the encounter, which is now under investigation.

"I expressed a feeling at the wrong time," he continued.

"I talked more with my heart than my head and for that I apologise – but the comments were out of context.

"The reason for my departure was that mine and the president's vision for the club were not the same."
