Rakitic rubbishes penalty claim

Ivan Rakitic rubbished claims he was fortunate not to concede a penalty on Iker Muniain in Barcelona’s 1-0 win at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

Rakitic emerged as Barca’s match-winner when he flung his head onto an Arda Turan cross midway through the first half but could have been his side’s villain after he tangled with Muniain near the byline, resulting in the attacker falling to the ground and the Croatian following suit.

“It’s here, at San Mames, that every game is very difficult and intense,” the midfielder said after the game.

“Athletic, as always, have been rivals of the most complicated ilk.

“I think both teams had an excellent game, although I have no doubt we deserved the win.

“We’re showing ourselves to be at a high level early on this season.

“We’re very happy with how things are going, we’re working very well and this is being seen on the pitch.

“Not at all was [his tangle with Muniain] a penalty kick. We both went for the ball and feel, but there was nothing punishable.”
