Esnaider: Marcelino will be happy…

A sarcastic Juan Esnaider quipped “Marcelino will be happy” as Getafe’s relegation from La Liga on Sunday was aided by Villarreal’s defeat to Sporting Gijon.

Marcelino admitted Villarreal’s match at Sporting was “awkward” for him due to his affinity with the Asturians, the latter of whom ultimately won 2-0, and Getafe’s 2-1 loss to Real Betis would have been spared by a Yellow Submarine victory due to their superior head-to-head with Abelardo Fernandez’s side.

“[Marcelino] will be happy,” the Coach, who also hinted he would be leaving El Geta, said after the game.

“What hurts us the most is not getting what we wanted, which was the win to keep us up.

“Still, it’s not easy to play these types of games. We weren’t good enough and I include myself in that because I take the primary responsibility for us not getting out of this situation.

“Now we must forget this and think about what comes next.

“We had chances to get into a better position in the match, but looking back, it’s useless.

“I’m satisfied with the delivery of the team and the attitude of the players, even [on Saturday], when we weren’t playing well. [The support] that I’ve received has been extraordinary.

“The situation isn’t easy. It’s difficult to lift the spirits of those who are here.

“I tried to erase the anxiety from the team, but it wasn’t possible. I’m proud to have been a part of Getafe during this spell.”
