La Liga to investigate Real-Rayo

La Liga has confirmed it will investigate allegations levelled at Rayo Vallecano that their players threw last Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Real Sociedad.

According to El Mundo, the LFP has received several complaints that some of Rayo’s players allowed their opponents to win the match at Anoeta, despite La Real having nothing to play for and the result leaving Los Vallecanos’ bid for survival out of their hands.

The newspaper also understands that Rayo fans met with the squad at the club’s training complex on Wednesday, demanding an explanation for the team’s attitude in San Sebastian.

A last-minute change in the betting odds, which turned a Rayo win into one for La Real, raised the first suspicions.

Commenting on the possibility of match-fixing, La Liga chief Javier Tebas noted “abnormal behaviour in betting”, although he made it clear that it meant nothing at this stage.

“That we’ve begun investigating a match doesn’t mean anything. We’ll investigate all kinds of rumours, which we can then determine whether they’re true or not,” he concluded.
