‘Madrid are detrimental to football’

Former Barcelona President Joan Gaspart has lashed out at claims the Catalans may try to bribe Granada ahead of their vital clash on Saturday.

La Blaugrana know a win over the Andalusians at Los Carmenes will hand them the title at the expense of Real Madrid, who are away to Deportivo la Coruna at the same time.

However, the 71-year-old has criticised Los Blancos and says they are detrimental to football.

“The only thing Real Madrid do is harm football and if I was a Granada player I’d be offended, because it suggests I can be bought and that it’s an indecent campaign,” Gaspart is quoted as saying by AS.

“I believe in football and its honesty. If such things are uncovered, though, through secure investigations, then the clubs involved would have to be punished.”

The ex-Blaugrana supremo also commented on allegations that Barca rewarded Tenerife financially in the 1990s, when the Islanders beat Real Madrid on the final day to hand his club the Primera title.

“Whoever says that is a liar. All we did was invite Tenerife to the Gamper Trophy for pre-season and nothing was paid.

“I’m confident both Granada and Deportivo la Coruna will be trying their best to prevent their opponents from lifting the trophy.”
