Merino ‘grateful’ to Betis players

Juan Merino expressed gratitude to his Real Betis players after relegation was avoided with a game to spare.

Betis needed a point at Eibar and duly got it to mean that they go into the last round of 2015-16 with no risk of an immediate return to the Segunda.

“We’ve taken a point so we don’t have to rely on anyone else, against an opponent who has had an impressive season and is there on merit. Once again, I’m happy and grateful to my players,” Merino said following the 1-1 draw, AS reports.

“Our objective was almost achieved but you can’t rest until you’ve done it mathematically. This was my purpose. Thanks to God, it’s been achieved. This was a real final. I’ve lived through so much in football and with Betis that I’ve experienced a bit of everything in recent times.”
