Emery rues ‘decisive mistakes’

Unai Emery rued Sevilla’s “two decisive mistakes” in their 2-1 defeat to Real Sociedad on Sunday as “this is when we appreciate our home form”.

Sevilla’s run of 17 straight wins at the Sanchez Pizjuan came to an end over the weekend as La Real – without a victory in five – profited thanks to Markel Bergara’s strike and Grzegorz Krychowiak’s own goal, leaving Los Nervionenses’ hopes of a top-four finish in La Liga hanging by a thread.

“This is when you appreciate how hard it is to maintain a winning streak [at home]. The success rate in each game has to be very high,” the Coach said after the game.

“The feeling is one of frustration. Our errors decided the game. It was a very close game at home, against a team who put us on the back foot.

“Coming back from 2-0 down was the toughest challenge of the season at our stadium.

“The team played with character but didn’t have success in front of goal. This is when we appreciate our home form.

“We have to keep going our way. [Sunday] was a great opportunity, but I can’t think beyond the next game and winning it.

“We still have the enthusiasm [of finishing fourth], although my face still transmits frustration.

“My inner satisfaction was seeing the team react, although we made two mistakes which decided the game.

“Villarreal are still favourites for fourth, but fifth is important and so is sixth because we don’t know if the seventh will be enough.

“I don’t know what awaits us in the League. For now, we’ll give the Europa League our attention.”
