Neville relishing San Mames

Valencia boss Gary Neville says he is looking forward to the atmosphere at San Mames against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday.

The former Manchester United defender takes his team to face the Basques in a first-leg Last 16 Europa League tie and is hoping Los Che can take advantage of the passion generated by the Bilbao supporters.

“It will be the first time I’ve been in this stadium but I’ve seen a lot of Athletic’s games, so I know the atmosphere the fans create,” Neville told gathered reporters.

“We have the players to respond to these type of situations but we know we’ve not shown our level of skill thus far, so maybe this is the time.

“In the games we’ve lost we needed to be more consistent because we didn’t deserve so little reward.”

Neville believes the 3-0 reverse suffered against Los Leones at home recently will have no bearing on the outcome of the Europa League encounter.

“This is going to be a game of two legs and at Mestalla the result should have been closer. Athletic played well but the outcome was not fair.

“We believe that Thursday will be different so we have to play with confidence. These are the type of games you always want to take part in as a player and a Coach, so we want to take a good result back for the return. That is what we are looking for.”
