Setien: Big step forward

Quique Setien praised his Las Palmas players for “taking a big step” towards survival in La Liga after Friday’s 1-0 win at Eibar.

Pedro Bigas’ goal on the stroke of half-time ended the islanders’ run of three straight defeats to leave them level on points with 17th-placed Sporting Gijon, and the Coach felt his side had the necessary momentum to secure their top-flight status.

“As a team, we needed a victory like this, especially for our fans,” he said after the game.

“The team’s response was important. We’ve taken a big step towards acquiring the confidence we need to achieve [survival].

“The game was quick because of the rain, but we created enough chances to score, even if we lacked success [in our finishing].

“There’s a lot of joy in the dressing room. This victory is important for us after a difficult week, but we must keep this momentum going.

“[On decisions going against Eibar], I’m sorry for Eibar, but sometimes it’s happened in reverse.

“The truth is that from where I was standing, it was difficult to see whether or not they should’ve had a penalty.”
