Ramos: Modric Madrid’s backbone

Sergio Ramos hailed Luka Modric after Real Madrid’s win over Granada, describing him as part of the team’s ‘backbone.’

Modric scored a stunning winning goal at Los Carmenes after Karim Benzema’s opener was cancelled out by Youssef El-Arabi, capping a high class performance that won praise from the Madrid captain.

“The goal makes him a bit more visible but to my way of understanding football he’s imperative,” Ramos said of Modric, AS reports.

“He’s part of the backbone, very important to us.”

Ramos weighed the game as a whole as well, commenting on Benzema, who netted in a sixth straight League game, and Madrid’s somewhat subdued performance.

“[Benzema] almost made it 2-0 for us. Having him is a tremendous joy,” Ramos continued.

“It’s clear all the games are different. This was hotly contested, they pressed more in the second half. We could have decided it but didn’t finish our chances and the game became complicated.

“But we persisted and Luka’s great goal means we get three points. The objective is to keep adding points in threes.

“We lacked precision today, we lost more balls than usual. The last image people had was from [the 6-0 win over Espanyol at Santiago Bernabeu], which was very high pressure and keeping the ball in the opponent’s half.

“Today we didn’t do that so much. But what we did, we did well and we have to have positive feelings.”
