Escriba: Europe not a problem

Fran Escriba has admitted that his Getafe players are free to target European football but warned forgetting about survival “would be wrong”.

El Geta moved level on points with Valencia thanks to their 1-0 victory over Real Betis on Saturday, which resulted in Pepe Mel’s dismissal a day later, and the Coach was happy for his players to have ambition.

“I think we’re getting closer to where we want to be, defending well and creating chances,” he said after the game.

“The feeling is good, despite our first half to the season not being great.

“If we had collected five or six more points, we’d be thinking about other things.

“We did the most to win [against Betis]. They had more aerial presence, but we caused them more problems.

“Thinking about Europe isn’t a problem. It’s a joy, but our objective, as I’ve said before, is comfortably avoiding relegation.

“At this stage of the season, not thinking about that would be wrong.

“[On Victor Rodriguez’s substitution], he left the game with discomfort but nothing serious.”
