Simeone: Augusto an important signing

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has hailed Augusto Fernandez as “an important signing” ahead of Saturday’s encounter with Levante in La Liga.

The midfielder is free to make his Atleti debut against the Valencians after his transfer from Celta Vigo was finally made official on Friday, and his new Coach is backing him to play a key role at the Vicente Calderon.

“I wish you all a Happy New Year and that you achieve everything you set out,” he said at a Press conference.

“[Augusto] is an important signing. He’ll give us options in midfield.

“He’s been playing in the double pivot, but he can play in other positions and will give us more competition.

“We work to always be ready. We’re a team who are growing, each player is doing his bit and playing in either all our most of our games.

“We wouldn’t be able to compete if it wasn’t like this. In our last game, those who came on were fresh, read the game well and were just what we needed.

“Minutes are for quality, not quantity. Playing 15 or 20 good minutes is better than 60 not so good.

“We need a lot of energy and strength, to continue competing and working with the enthusiasm we have, and health on a personal level.

“Levante aren’t getting good results but are working well and playing compactly.

“If we don’t play with speed and intensity, we’ll struggle to find the way to win.

“They’ll pack their midfield and look to the counter with danger.”
