‘League, not cup, is Espanyol’s priority’

Sergio Gonzalez has made it clear that La Liga, not the Copa del Rey, is Espanyol’s priority this season ahead of Monday’s rematch against Levante.

The two sides drew 1-1 in the first leg of their cup tie at Ciutat de Valencia on Thursday, but the Coach does not foresee a similar game when they battle it out for a second time in Catalonia.

“The League is what feeds us,” he said at a Press conference.

“It’s the main course, the most important. The Copa [del Rey] comes second, it’s the dessert.

“The further you go, the more you want it. Hopefully we are much more successful than our opponents.

“Some mechanisms and situations may repeat themselves, but every player brings something different.

“Whoever plays must be vigilant, it’s an important game regardless.

“We hope that this pressure will allow us to take a step forward.

“[Levante] know [Marco Asensio] is an important outlet for us, but we’re working on others.

“We’re trying to avoid the scenario that we only score goals when he plays.

“[On Abraham Gonzalez’s run in the team], the opportunities have arisen and it’s been up to him to take them.

“[On cup goalscorer Mamadou Sylla], he’s been pushing hard every minute.”
