Benitez hails ‘team victory’

Rafa Benitez hailed Real Madrid’s team effort and “spirit of sacrifice” in Sunday’s 2-0 win at Eibar in La Liga.

Goals from Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo ensured Los Blancos bounced back from their Clasico mauling at the first attempt in the League, and the Coach refused to single out anyone after the game as he commended his side’s all-round game.

“[Sunday] was a victory for the team,” he said after the game.

“Our first goal was the result of a move that we’d rehearsed all week.

“We’re still in November and we’ve had many injuries. I’m optimistic we’ll fight every game until the end.

“[I liked most] our spirit of sacrifice. There were phases in which we played particularly well and the players understood that Real Madrid want work, intensity and effort and then the quality will come.

“I hate singling out players after a team victory, with the hard work of everyone, including those who have played and those who didn’t.

“[On James Rodriguez and Mateo Kovacic], all the players who were involved seemed to have had a sensational game.

“[Ronaldo] scored a goal, created chances and worked for the team. Everyone contributed and helped out, so I’m delighted.

“[Eibar] were aggressive, intense and didn’t allow for a quiet game. The win has more merit when it comes against tough opponents.

“I’ve been [to Ipurua] a few times. I really like [Eibar] as a team and their humility is an example to other clubs in La Liga.

“They should be proud to have a pitch where it’s so difficult to win.”
