Emery: Sevilla need consistency

Unai Emery believes the time has come for Sevilla to “start building up consistency” ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Getafe at Sanchez Pizjuan.

The Andalucians have been dogged by an inability to string results together this season, with back-to-back La Liga wins being sandwiched by a defeat to Juventus in the Champions League and followed by dropped points against Eibar and another loss to Manchester City.

“I expect us to play with the intention of winning, reaching [Getafe’s] goal and being effective,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

“[I also expect us to] defend well so [Getafe] have the least number of chances.

“[Getafe] have picked up the same number of points as Sevilla in the last three games. They have a good defence and players [in attack] who can hurt us.

“They have a philosophy based on the work of their Coach Fran Escriba, whose special touch has seen them concede very little, so our forwards must perform. It’ll be a difficult match.

“I hope we can become more effective in front of goal because my confidence in our forwards remains intact.

“Therefore, my only concern is finishing off the chances we create. [Saturday’s] a good day for progress to be seen on the pitch.

“[Yevhen Konoplyanka’s] attitude and development has been very good since he came here.

“He’s providing things, even tactically. If I was happy with him before, now I’m even more so because his performances are improving.

“Mariano and [Sergio] Escudero need to offer relief to our full-backs [Coke and Benoit Tremoulinas].

“The former is ready to play in Coke’s absence, but Escudero has been injured and must improve his competitiveness.

“There are grounds for optimism [despite being in the bottom half] – our great second half against Celta [Vigo], the good things we did against Rayo [Vallecano] and the entirety of our match against Barcelona.

“Confidence remains high, but we must now start building up consistency.”
