Setien replaces Herrera at Las Palmas

Las Palmas have confirmed the departure of Paco Herrera and the appointment of Quique Setien as Coach until the end of the season.

Marca reports Setien has the option for a further year on the bench after stepping in for Herrera with the island outfit, newly promoted to the Primera this season via the Segunda play-offs but struggling after eight games.

Herrera’s exit is the first coaching change in the top flight this season and comes after Las Palmas were beaten 4-0 by Getafe on Sunday.

“[Las Palmas thank Herrera for] his dedication, professionalism, loyalty and cordiality from the first day he assumed the direction of the team,” a club statement read.

“We wish him all the success in the future, conscious that he wrote one of the happiest pages in the history of this club, promotion to the Primera.”

Setien, a former midfielder for Racing Santander, Atletico Madrid, Logrones and Levante, as well as winner of a handful of Spain caps in the mid-1980s, last trained Lugo, leaving in 2015.

The 57-year-old has also been employed by Racing and Logrones, as well as the Equatorial Guinea national team.
