Simeone hails Correa impact

Diego Simeone hailed Angel Correa for breaking open Atletico Madrid’s “tough and difficult” 2-0 victory over Eibar in La Liga on Saturday.

The 20-year-old – who finally joined Los Colchoneros in the summer after heart complications delayed his switch by a year – came off the bench to net the opening goal at Ipurua, before fellow substitute Fernando Torres rounded off the win.

“Angel Correa is a player who dominates the area just outside the box and also has a goal in him,” the Coach said after the game.

“His introduction was the highlight of the game, when the team needed a piece of individual brilliance in a tough and difficult game.

“Eibar worked very well defensively [in the first half], but we had a good second half thanks to Fernando Torres, Oliver [Torres] and [Angel] Correa.

“[Luciano] Vietto and Jackson Martinez are working well. At Atletico, the individuals are at the entire team’s service.

“If they hadn’t done their job in the first half, we wouldn’t have had such a good second. We have an important squad, as we showed in Seville and Turkey.

“The players I’ve brought on [during matches this season] have done very well, such as Jackson Martinez in Seville and Fernando Torres, Oliver and Correa [on Saturday]. They’ve proven to be very good players.

“In the first half, we had three chances that we couldn’t take. The game, despite Eibar’s intensity, was played more in our opponents’ box.

“In the second half, we focused on the players who could ‘break’ the match, and Correa’s introduction unbalanced a tough and difficult game.”
