Former Barcelona and Real Madrid star Luis Figo has compared the Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi rivalry to “choosing between white truffles and caviar”.
The pair are expected to go head-to-head for the eighth successive year in January’s FIFA Ballon d’Or gala, but the Portuguese great refused to back his countryman as he claimed only form could separate them.
“[Choosing between Ronaldo and Messi is like choosing] between white truffles and caviar. It’s not right to compare them,” he said at an ambassadorial event for La Liga on Thursday.
“[The only difference between them] depends on the form they’re showing. We should enjoy their quality and not compare them with one another.
“[On the 2015 Ballon d’Or], it won’t be any different from previous years. It’ll be between Ronaldo and Messi.”
