Mendilibar: Victory most important

Eibar Coach Jose Luis Mendilibar values the win over Granada more than being leaders of the League after the first round of games.

Los Armeros took a 3-1 win from their trip to Los Carmenes, taking a two-goal lead before half-time while Granada, after getting back into the match shortly after the break, went down to 10 men when Salva Ruiz was dismissed.

Mikel Arruabarrena sealed the victory not long after the red card to move Eibar – who were relegated last season only to be reinstated when Elche were demoted – to first place in the table.

“The important thing is the victory. Being the leaders is just an anecdote,” Mendilibar said, AS reports.

“It means it is necessary to save the newspapers to remember it but nothing more.

“We’ve trained hard, worked carefully and the people have done well. We’ve felt like a team, which is important.

“Some of the kids we’ve only known for four days and it’s a good sign that they have given everything.

“It would be easy to say everything turned out as we thought it would. We were calm until the start of the second half but then we had a bad 10 minutes until we took charge again.”
